what to wear, what to see...

What to pack?  The weather is changeable and best described as “Maritime”. Located on the shores of Prince William Sound on the Gulf of Alaska in the farthest north temperate rain forest means Cordova gets a fare share of precipitation.  Bring waterproof clothing and footwear.  Otherwise, for summer, wear layers. The temperature can range from low 50’s to high 70’s. Sunglasses are a must near the water.  Oh, Yes! Bring your camera.

What is there to do?  Well…nothing. If you want. You will have a great view right from your window at The Reluctant.  But of course you wouldn’t come all this way to do that so…..visit the museum to learn of our history, walk the docks to see commercial fishing boats up close and “talk fish” with the locals. Enjoy our world famous Copper River Salmon in our copper embellished dining room with a view of the very boats that make it happen.  Let us help you plan your stay: hike our near alpine mountains, take a flight-seeing tour, or go fishing.

The 36 mile drive across the Copper River Delta, the largest wetlands on continent, is a destination in itself:  Trumpeter Swan, Bald Eagles, Dusky Canada Geese, Brown Bear, Black Bear, Moose and Beavers are all in residence.  Visiting the historic Million Dollar Bridge and Childs Glacier at mile 52 is no longer accessible via the Copper River Highway. The bridge at mile 36 is not longer passable. A local guide service is available to ferry you across and you will have a front row seat at “The Glacier” as the locals refer to Childs Glacier.  You have the advantage of seeing a glacier calving from a 300’ face  into the water from a comfortable seat on land directly 1200’ across. The USFS campground has copper-topped picnic sites and rest-room facilities and the guide service is all inclusive for your visit.
